RB Royal Joins Forces with Folding@home to Provide Computing Power in Search for COVID-19 Vaccine

Fond du Lac, WI – June 10th, 2020 – As a member of the Fond du lac community for over 75 years, giving back has always been a top priority. As the COVID-19 pandemic expanded across the United States, RB Royal began looking for a way that they could give back at not only a community level, but a global one. That’s when they came across Folding@home, a project focused on disease research and finding therapeutic cures. Insights from their data are helping scientists to develop new drugs and aid in disease prevention. To provide support to Folding@home, RB Royal signed up to donate computing power during off hours to be used in the search for therapeutic treatments for COVID-19. The research being done by Folding@home requires an incredible amount of computer calculations so the ability to tap into the unused computer power of donor companies expedites the research process.
At its core, Folding@home is a computing project that ‘citizen scientists’ can run at home to simulate protein dynamics. Specifically, F@h is looking to learn the process of protein folding and how to bind these proteins to prevent folding. When proteins are able to fold, they are able to perform their biological function. In the case of COVID-19, the biological function is to reproduce and spread. By running these simulations, F@h could learn how COVID-19 functions and find a therapeutic treatment that prevents it from spreading itself throughout the body. They have already made strides in the search for Ebola treatments by finding a pocket in the protein that can be treated.
